Abstract

The debate on a ‘degrowth society’ has broadened all over the world since the start of the global financial crisis in 2008, and there is also a vibrant discussion which is since the 2010s trying to critically approach economic growth and analyze the crisis of capitalism from a new perspective in Germany. The discussion of a degrowth society that aims to promote a good life, not growth, has a important implication in that it draws a sketch of an alternative to a capitalism in crisis which is appearing as a growth crisis and ecological crisis today. However, in conceiving an ‘an alternative economy that does not depend on growth’, it has not been able to include a critical analysis of care and social reproduction which are constitutive for a growing society. Therefore, while critically approaching the gender insensitivity of the debate on a degrowth society, it is time for a deeper theoretical and practical exploration of the topic in order to move towards a degrowth society from a feminist perspective. In this context, this study examines the possibility that the debate on a degrowth society may depart from the paradigm of growth as a social and ecological issue and move toward the inclusion of issues such as care and social reproduction. And based on this, it comes to the conclusion that the vision for a degrowth society should be designed in a way that production economy and care economy have the same value and receive the same treatment.
