Abstract
This paper aims to rewrite the process of Korea's development from a gender perspective through the conceptualization of social reproduction. There has been renewed attention paid to the Korea's development experiences and the developmental state, since Korea has become the first country that has shifted its position from aid-recipient to aid-donor in the global society. While the developmental state in Korea has been heavily relying on the family and Confucius familialism, many studies of the developmental state hardly include the site of the family in the analytical level, delivering only partial explanation of the development process. The conceptualization of social reproduction, in contrast, gives a full picture of the development process by incorporating the process of reproduction as well as production, which has been central to development and production through interlinking dichotomies between the public and the private, between the state and society, between production and reproduction, and between economy and non-economy. In so doing, it discloses women's role in economic contribution, which has remained invisible, and also helps to explain why gender inequalities are persistent in Korea despite the remarkable economic growth. Lastly, this paper argues that Korea has faced the crisis of social reproduction, calling for the new strategies of gender politics, since the cost of reproduction has been disproportionately shirked to the family, i.e. women due to the continuing developmentalism that prioritizes economic growth over redistribution and reproduction in the post-developmental state.
