Abstract

This study established the relation between the ‘literary history’ and the ‘cultural history’,the ‘history of customs’ through explaining sociocultural conditions and ideologies of emerging studies on the modern Korean cultural history. 10 years have passed since studies on the modern Korean cultural history started, and they became one of most fruitful fields in studies on the modern Korean literature. But it is hard to explain why studies on the modern Korean cultural history fall within studies on the modern Korean literature except the fact that the former has leaded by researchers of the latter. The fundamental difference between studies on the modern Korean literature and studies on the modern Korean cultural history is the difference in the concept of the knowledge which two studies premise. Studies on the modern Korean cultural history prevailed under four sociocultural conditions; the decline of foreign literary theories including post-modernism, changing the status of knowledge, the introduction of the microstoria and the construction of the vast database on Korean studies. Studies on modern Korean cultural history supposes human behaviors are controlled by desires not by ideologies and knowledges. So studies on modern Korean cultural history calls another a word the modernology of desires and they reveals ideology of desire which denies ideology. Studies on the modern Korean cultural history are expected to contribute writing the new literary history including problems of desires.
