Abstract

This paper was written to explain methodological contents and meaning of a cultural-institutional history research for modern literature. The methodology in this paper shares many places with cultural-theoretical researches, from a point of view which regards modern literature as a mode of aspects of modern culture. But in other hands, unlike general tendency of cultural-theoretical methodology attaching importance to the ‘representation’ itself, I will, in this paper, concentrate upon describing the background and base of modern literature through laying emphasis on the interrelation — between socio-institutional motive power and modern literature — which makes the literature function. The theoretical characteristic of cultural-institutional research is to investigate the very question “what was modern literature?” in complicated mechanism between subdivided social institutions and groups of modern society, linking up the transected network in space and consecutive change in time, independently or connectively. The ultimate aim of this methodology is to restore the whole view of systemized modern cultural- institution, both microscopically and macroscopically. Therefore, it is expected that various types of new researches, having appeared due to their own necessities, will be continuously carried, and cooperative relations with neighboring academic areas will be also positively established.
