Abstract

This paper aims to examine the content and principles of democracy as perceived and practised by the ‘The Light Stick Women Youth’ who appeared in the impeachment square after 3 December 2024, and to discuss what it can teach me as a teacher at a teacher training institution and a school education researcher. For this purpose, I analysed the writings of the women themselves and the interview articles about them published in daily and weekly newspapers. The results of the analysis showed that the ‘The Light Stick Women Youth’ generate unfamiliar and new sensations that shake up the existing framework of perception in their various practices. The temporality of the here-and-now is an unfamiliar temporality that suspends the democracy of the here-and-now and asks, for whom is the future democracy they are trying to achieve? The tentacular practice of solidarity that these women engage in through physical contact reminds us that democracy is not an abstract slogan or principle, but a physical and material matter with feet on the ground. The women's act of solidarity, responding to the I-Thou entanglement, makes us recognise that those who are suffering now are not separate from us. This sense can move us beyond compassion and sympathy for the marginalised to a practice that seeks to change society by changing ourselves. The democracy that the ‘The Light stick Women Youth’ sensed and practised made me re-examine my life and research methods as a researcher and teacher who is involved in and practises schooling, as well as the premises of my work. This prompts me to consider what kind of ontology, epistemology, and ethics schooling should be based on in order to assemble teaching and learning, daily life, and relationships.
