Abstract
This study aims to examine how young women, who had always been present in the square but remained invisible, emerged as new political subjects in the impeachment square following the 2024 martial law crisis, and to clarify the conditions and meanings of this appearance. Using media interview materials, the study analyzed the square experiences of young women. Young women have embodied precarity in their everyday lives, sharing over the past decade experiences of structural insecurity and gender-violence, which became the condition of their emergence for democracy. Their appearance also transformed the square from a space of exclusion and hierarchy into a more equal and democratic arena, realizing square democracy through the practice of “square-style self-introduction,” that is, speaking and listening to minority identities. In particular, the Namtaeryeong confrontation provided an opportunity to confirm the possibility of solidarity with diverse marginalized groups and to generate multiple squares that continued beyond the immediate moment. The 2024-25 impeachment square, therefore, was not simply a site of regime change, but a square in which young women, confronting structural insecurity and precarity, created a new democratic square and emerged as political subjects through solidarity with other minority groups.
