본 연구는 벤야민의 역사철학과 데리다의 메시아적 정치학 간의 관계성을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 벤야민은 구체적 과거의 기억을 통한 혁명을 말한 반면 데리다는 미래 지향적 지속 혁신의 태도를 강조한다. 벤야민과 데리다는 모두 과거의 희생과 기억을 현재의 정치와 연결시키지만, 벤야민은 보다 직접적으로 과거의 억울함을 현재 혁명으로 구원하고자 했고, 데리다는 과거의 망령들이 계속 현재를 괴롭히도록 내버려두면서 그들과 함께 지속적인 정의 추구를 이어가고자 했다. 데리다의 절대적 환대의 윤리와 벤야민의 억압된 자들의 해방은 모두 배제된 타자를 향한 정의 구현이라는 지향에서 만난다. 벤야민과 데리다는 현존하는 법질서나 지배체제를 절대시하지 않고 그것을 넘어서는 정의와 구원을 사유했다. 벤야민의 사유는 기득권적 법질서에 균열을 내고 단숨에 변혁을 일으키는 정치적 결단을 강조한다. 데리다의 사유는 일상적인 민주주의 활동 속에서 영원히 미완의 정의를 추구하며 기존 제도를 개선해나가는 것이다. 결국 벤야민과 데리다의 사유를 계승한다는 것은 역사의 망각된 목소리에 응답하고 타자를 향한 무조건적 환대와 도래할 정의에 대한 요구를 멈추지 않는 것이다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate the differences and similarities between Derrida’s politics and Benjamin’s philosophy of history. Benjamin insists for revolution through the remembrance of sore past experiences. On the other hand, Derrida suggests a future-oriented attitude of continuous renewal. They link the memory of past sacrifices and injustices to contemporary political action. While Benjamin envisions redemption through revolutionary intervention in the present, directly addressing historical injustices, Derrida allows the ghosts of the past to continue haunting the present, continuing an unending pursuit of justice. Derrida’s ethics of unconditional hospitality and Benjamin’s liberation of the oppressed meet in their shared orientation toward carrying justice for the excluded Other. Both never absolutize existing legal or political systems, but seek toward a justice and redemption that transcends established orders. Benjam emphasizes a political decision which breaks through the established legal order and brings about sudden transformation. Derrida, however, pursues an ever-unfinished justice within the practices of everyday democracy that does the reform and improvement of existing institutions. In the end, to inherit the thought of Benjamin and Derrida is to attend to the silenced voices of history and to never cease demanding unconditional hospitality and justice to come.
