이 글은 자크 데리다의 발터 벤야민과 마르틴 하이데거에 대한 독해를 검토하면서 최근 서양 인문학계에서 하나의 화두가 되고 있는 메시아주의적 정치의 철학적 원천들(과/또는 대안들)을 탐색해보려고 한다. 데리다는 『법의 힘』과 『마르크스의 유령들』에서 벤야민의 폭력론과 하이데거의 시간론을 독해하면서 메시아주의 없는 메시아적인 것이라는 새로운 해방의 정치의 개념을 제시한다. 우리는 이 개념의 의미를 정확히 파악하기 위해서는 데리다가 초기 저작에서 제시한 유사초월론의 관점에서 읽어야 한다고 생각한다. 그런 관점에서 읽으면 메시아주의 없는 메시아적인 것은 봉기냐 개혁이냐 혁명이냐 민주주의냐 하는 이원론적 양자택일을 넘어 해방을 정치를 새롭게 사고할 수 있는 길을 제공해줄 수 있을뿐더러 더 나아가 초월론적인 것의 역사에 관한 철학적 전망을 열어놓을 수 있으리라는 것이 이 글의 주장이다.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to probe one of the philosophical resources (and/or of the alternatives) of contemporary messianic political philosophies (Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Slavoy Zizek etc.) in Jacques Derrida's reading of Walter Benjamin and Martin Heidegger. Derrida suggests the concept of 'the messianic without messianism' as a central category for a new emancipatory politics in the deconstructive readings of Benjamin's theory of violence and Heidegger's doctine of time in his Force of Law and Specters of Marx. I think it is necessary to understand the concept on the baisis of quasi-transcendentalism for appreciating its deep implications. On the quasi-transcendental reading of it, it becomes clear, I hope, that 'the messianic without messianism' could not only present a way to rethink the emancipatory politics beyond the worn-out dualisms (insurgency or reform, revolution or democracy etc.), but also open the philosophical perspective for a history(ies) of the transcendentals.
