Abstract
The blade industry of Altai region largely consisted of Kara-Bom variant and Karakol variant coexisting between 40 and 30 ka, and relics of each type are distributed in various regions of Altai without regional distinction. The blade technological system in this region reflects all categories of technical elements for reducing the blade according to the ‘origin effect’. In particular, in sites in Siberia and contigeous regions, the technological system gradually evolves from large blade to middle and small blade reduction stratagy, but it is noteworthy that most technologies appear simultaneously in the Altai region. This technology is based on the succeeding Levallois technology and each influenced the transition to blade technology. The Kara-Bom variant includes reduction strategy, which flakes blades of various sizes from large blades to small and middle blades through blade production utilizing a large prismatic core, and has a tendency to remove very large blades. Producing these blades involves advanced technology that requires special skills in blade reduction technology. In the Karakol variant, it can be seen that the narrow faced core, conical core, wedge-shaped core that appear are reduced to small and medium-sized blades. This type shows the tendency of the technological system to produce small and medium-sized stone blades rather than large stone blades. Additionally, a microblade core based on bifacial flaking does not exist. The size of the blade core of each variant is closely related to the size of the Levallois core of the MP. Of course, this does not mean that both of these variants do not have large blade cores or small and microblade cores, but that they show the same tendency. According to chronology and blade production technology, this technology in the Altai region left the Altai region in 40-30 ka and spread along the steppe of central and eastern Siberia, and to the border areas of southern Altai, such as Central Asia, Mongolia, and Inner Mongolia. Looking at the evolutionary stages of stone tools in representative EUP sites such as the Tolbor site in Mongolia, the Obi-Rakhmat and Ushbulak sites in Central Asia, the Shuidongou site in Inner Mongolia and the Suyanggae site in Korea, including the Siberian steppe, we can see that, unlike the Altai region, the stone blade production technology system tends to appear in stages from the Kara-Bom type to the Karakol type. This observation is no different from that of Zwins and other scholars who have different views on the origin theory of blade industry in the Altai. This archaeological evidence of the spread of stone tool culture will be important data in understanding the migration flow of the Denisovan(Homo sapiens altaiensis). Meanwhile, the research results so far are clear that these two variants of blade industry have spread to various regions of North Asia and Northeast Asia, but they only confirm fragmented information centered on major sites. Among the blade technologies of the Karakol variant, it was confirmed that the microblade core was manufactured. However, it is questionable how this technology evolved into a systematic microblade technology based on the bifacial flaking found in the Selemdja Upper Paleolithic complex(27ka BP). A microblade industry based on the bifacial technique can emerge only when [Technical Factor A] encompassing a wide range of blade reduction strategies, [Technical Factor B] where the bifacial technique is universally used in tool manufacturing, and [Environmental Factor] where there is an economic need for a large number of blades and microblades are simultaneously satisfied. Presumably, if the microblade industry based on the bifacial technique was initially established in the Far East, the microblade industry that started in the Altai region as the Anui 2 site is likely to have established itself as a microblade technological system such as the wedge type, conical type, and prismatic type in Mongolia, Central Asia, and Inner Mongolia based on the blade industry.
