Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of refinement on Korean language for technical terminology and to present guidelines for standardization of the Korean defence standards(KDSs) used by military and civilian as the two axes of defence industry. The standardization through a refinement on Korean language of technical terminology of the Korean defence standards have to be properly accomplished by related experts. For this, I would like to present the results to identify and analyze the language used differently in military and civil section to the committee for establishment or revision. KDSs are generally applied to purvey and to manufacture. The capability and material, shape, measure, volume, color, manufacturing, pavement and testing procedures in KDSs are clearly described. Therefore KDSs are used by many people who are experts of planning, purveying, manufacturing and testing. If refinement of technical terminology stay on presenting only, we will have no satisfactory results. When all people using KDSs are able to understand the terminology, they can make a fine products and provide. The showing and using of refined terminology will give no communication problem among related people of KDSs. DT&Q(Defence Agency for technology and Quality) has made a great effort for repairing thousands of terminology and showing hundreds of refined Korean language for past three years. DT&Q also refined Chinese character-type technical terminology easily and showed refined terminology about Japanese Chinese character and loan word. And DT&Q presented the results to review refined Korean language of English-type loan word. And DT&Q showed the procedures to correct spacings, erratums and wrong words according to Korean grammar. In conclusion, four refining guidelines for KDSs technical terminology referring to previous performances are suggested as follows. First, this study suggests refinement method which many people related to KDSs can use. Second, a difficult Chinese character-type technical terminology must be refined easily. Third, people must use and write Japanese Chinese character and loan word consciously. Fourth, a use of refined terminology linking working field and institute has to be settled.
