본 논문은 專門用語 飜譯 및 純化 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 문제를 유형적으로 파악하고, 이를 완화하기 위해 고려할 지점들을 검토하였다. 그동안 다양한 기관에서는 外來 專門用語에 대하여 가능한 한 한국어 飜譯語․ 純化語를 마련하기 위해 노력해 왔으나, 飜譯․純化의 대상을 선정하는 구체적 기준은 충분하지 않다. 본 연구는 ISO 표준에서 제시하는 ‘개념조화(harmonization of concepts)’ 관점을 적용하여, 飜譯․純化된 용어가 원어와 같은 개념 범위를 충분히 담아내지 못할 때 생길 수 있는 대표적인 문제를 네 가지 유형으로 정리하였다. 이러한 문제들은 현장 전문가들 사이에서 새 번역어에 대한 거부감이나 사용상의 혼란으로 이어질 수 있다. 이를 해결하기 위해 본 논문은 다양한 차용 전략의 효용을 검토함과 동시에, 기존국어순화의 목적이 언어 순수주의가 아닌 ‘원활한 소통’으로 변화해 왔음을 짚어본다. 따라서 專門用語 飜譯·純化 대상 선정은 개념조화 가능성과 해당 분야·사용자의 목적을 종합적으로 고려해야 함을 강조한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to classify potential issues that may arise during the translation and purification of specialized terminology and to examine key considerations for addressing these issues. While various institutions in Korea have conducted efforts to translate foreign technical terms and promote user-friendly Korean expressions, the criteria for selecting such terms remain underdeveloped. Applying the “harmonization of concepts” framework proposed in ISO standards, this study categorizes four types of risks that occur when translated or purified terms diverge from the conceptual scope of their originals. Such discrepancies may lead to confusion or resistance among field experts. To mitigate this, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of different borrowing strategies, noting that the goal of Korean language purification has shifted from linguistic purism toward facilitating smooth communication. Therefore, the selection of specialized terms for translation and purification should take into account both conceptual harmonization and the communicative needs of the field and its users.
