Abstract

The Repatriated Japanese who lived in Jeonju from the end of the 19th century until 1945 call Jeonju their true or second hometown and are nostalgic about it. This study analyzes the magazine Jeonju(『全州』), published by the Jeonju-hoe(全州会)― a hometown-friends association formed by The Repatriated Japanese―to commemorate its 25th anniversary in 1979, as its primary historical source. They revisit Jeonju in the 1970s, leaning on what has not changed, immersing themselves in memories and being moved. They show the two extremes of emotion, hoping that Jeonju will remain the same, but also wishing that Jeonju will develop into a bigger city. They accept and negotiate the rebuke and kindness of the Koreans and strive to recreate the colonial Jeonju as a heterotopie. The memory of The Repatriated Japanese contained in Jeonju reconstruct colonial Jeonju as a peaceful, beautiful, ideal space where violence and the existence of the subjugated are excluded or marginalized. However, the testimony of HeoJeom-bong, the sole Korean contributor, regarding his forced name change and discrimination acts as a ‘counter-memory’ that cracks this idealized memory. This study focuses on the negotiation process through which The Repatriated Japanese, visiting Jeonju in the 1970s, sought to recreate and justify these idealized memories through interactions with local Koreans. This negotiation exhibits a symmetrical characteristic: it accepts Koreans' rebuke of Japanese colonial violence and, in return, acquires kindness. Through this, the space of idealized memory is permitted to exist as a ‘chronique heterotopie’ in the real world.
