This thesis investigates how Japanese people in Korea perceived about yesterday’s colonial regime during their repatriation soon after the defeat of Japan. Writer analyzed resources of Chosun Government General, newsletters of Sewakai (Japanese Relief Society) as official reports and personal memoirs of Japanese repatriates. We can confirm the perception of Japanese people in the records which almost of Japanese did not think of Korean liberation or political change as national independence. And they did not throw off their conservative thoughts about the results of Japanese Empire toward Korean people. We can also find the perceptions of Japanese people in Sewakai’s newsletters which many Japanese wanted to remain in Korea even after defeated, and they were changing their minds to repatriate into Japan as time went on. As a remarkable outcome of this study, the writer tried to categorize the Japanese people’s perception about yesterday’s colonialism in Korea as following 5 types：① Perception that the political and economic conditions was same to both Japanese and Korean people under the colonial rule. ② Perception emphasizing the beauty of Korean nature not looking after squarely the political and economic conditions. ③ Perception emphasizing changed status at that time ignoring yesterday. ④ Perception that Japanese people was good manager under the colonial regime. ⑤ Perception that regrets not having governed Korea better under the yesterday’s government. We can find the articles showing such the classified perceptions in the newsletter and memoirs written by Japanese people waiting their repatriation.
Abstract
