Abstract

More than 60 years after decolonization, how are Africa and Africans perceived and reproduced by Europeans today? In order to deal with this problem, it is necessary to study images that were involved in the daily and socio-political life of the time that the majority of the European public encountered during the colonial period. Research is needed on images that have maintained a complex and subtle relationship between fiction, symbols, and reality and have become a harsh message for the majority of the public thanks to propaganda and propagation. The imagination or imaginary world of ordinary Frenchmen in France about African soldiers was formed during World War I. This paper is a study on the image of colonies, especially African black soldiers, reproduced by the French during the war. The large amount of images encountered while preparing for the thesis emphasizes the importance of image data during the colonial period in the formation of French colonial consciousness. The image of the French as colonists during World War I, of whom the vast majority participated in the war, is diverse and multifaceted. In order to analyze these images, I will first mention the importance and role of Africans during World War I in the imaginary world of “The Greatest France”. Next, I would like to highlight the image of a black soldier as a “grand enfant” in the advertisement for “Banania”, a famous hot chocolate powder product, and also consider the ambivalent aspect of the caricatured image of Africans. The indifference and oblivion of the French colonies’ military contribution and the late recognition of the colonial empire’s sacrifice as compensation for this will be introduced. And finally, I would like to examine Germany’s propaganda activities against the “Black Shame” as an occupational force after the end of World War I, and France’s response to this.
