본 논문은 루이 페데르브(Louis Faidherbe) 장군 동상과 그것을 둘러싼 프랑스의 기억문화에 대해 조망해 본 연구이다. 특히 이 기념물에 대한 저항 운동을 중심으로 과거 식민주의 유산을 대하는 프랑스인들의 입장에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 루이 페데르브의 생애를 그의 식민지 경력과 식민주의 이념을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 프랑스 릴 출신의 평범한 젊은이가 어떻게 알제리 정복 시기 젊은 군인으로, 그리고 세네갈의 ‘평정자(pacificateur)’로 이름을 떨쳤는지, ‘식민주의 전문가’이자 ‘인종주의 이념가’였던 그가 어떻게 ‘식민지 공화국’의 상징이 되었는지를 조사했다. 다음 장은 그를 기념하기 위해 릴에 설립된 승마 동상 제작 관련 논의와 과정, 그리고 동상 자체에 대한 소개에 할애했다. 더불어 페데르브 사후 직후부터 시작된 그에 대한 ‘기억 작업’이 어떤 식으로 진행되었는지를 검토했다. 마지막 장에서는 2018년 이후부터 시작된 페데르브 동상의 ‘식민지적 차원’에 대한 비판 운동을 “페데르브는 무너져야 한다” 단체의 활동을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 특히 프랑스 식민지 역사의 침묵을 고발하며, 지배 관계를 구현하는 동상의 의미를 알리고, 페데르브 동상을 제거하거나 근본적으로 변모하도록 공공 기관에 요청하는 그들의 노력의 의미와 영향에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 이러한 모든 내용을 통해 식민주의의 상징을 전복하는 행위가 물질적이고도 정신적인 탈식민화를 달성하는 데 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지에 대해 숙고해보았다.
Abstract
This paper examines the statue of General Louis Faidherbe and the French memory culture surrounding it. In particular, it examines the French people’s position on the legacy of colonialism, focusing on the resistance movement against this monument. To this end, it first examines the life of Louis Faidherbe, focusing on his colonial career and colonial ideology. It examines how an ordinary young man from Lille, France, became a young soldier during the conquest of Algeria and a ‘peacemaker’ in Senegal, and how he, a ‘colonialism expert’ and ‘racist ideologue’, became a symbol of the ‘colonial republic’. The next chapter is devoted to the discussion and process of the production of the equestrian statue erected in Lille to commemorate him, as well as an introduction to the statue itself. In addition, it examines how the ‘memory work’ on Faidherbe, which began immediately after his death, was carried out. The final chapter examines the critique of the ‘colonial dimension’ of the Faidherbe statue since 2018, focusing on the activities of the group “Faidherbe Must Fall”. In particular, it examines the meaning and impact of their efforts to denounce the silence of French colonial history, to raise awareness of the meaning of the statue as an embodiment of dominant relations, and to call on public institutions to remove or fundamentally transform the Faidherbe statue. Through all of this, we considered how the act of subverting the symbol of colonialism could contribute to achieving both material and spiritual decolonization.
