Abstract

This study aims to examine the gendered discourse of nationalism in Germany after the First World War and the subsequent economic hardships, by using visual representation to understand how it is utilised and how existing gender relations are reproduced. The study explores the changing portrayal of men through the war's progression by examining the transition from a romanticised youth at the beginning of the war to an elderly figure after defeat, which sheds light on the masculinised representation of war. Additionally the study delves into the discourse surrounding family and national security. It investigates narratives ranging from the discourse that national security is synonymous with safeguarding the home to the portrayal of families traumatised by the nation's defeat. Finally the study scrutinizes the dichotomy of villainous and virtuous women imposed during the post-defeat period. It examines how France's occupation of the Ruhr region is depicted as the atrocities of a villainess, while Germany itself is portrayed as a suffering good girl and devoted mother enduring the pain. Overall, this study analyses how Germany's nationalist response to defeat utilizes visual media to maintain or strengthen existing patriarchal societal orders.
