Abstract

The purpose of this study is to suggest a method of hypoxic training applicable to taekwondo athletes. In this study, 8 Korean national taekwondo players trained for 12 days in a hypoxic environment at an altitude of 2,500m-3,000m. The exercise intensity was 75-85% maximum heart rate (HRmax), and the total 90 minutes of the daily exercise program were as follows: treadmill running (30 mins), interval exercise (30 mins), and cycling (30 mins). Aerobic exercise capacity (physical work capacity (PWC) 75% HRmax, PWC75% HRmax arrival time) was evaluated using a bicycle ergometer in sea level environment before and after training. As a result of training, the aerobic exercise ability of the five athletes improved, and the aerobic exercise ability of the other three athletes decreased. As a result of analyzing the correlation between the conditions of participation in training, and the degree of improvement, an improvement effect of aerobic exercise ability was found in athletes who faithfully performed the planned training program. These results showed that even national athletes whose physical strength has already reached the highest level could further improve their aerobic exercise ability through short-term hypoxic training. It suggests that adherence to the planned training regimen is key to its beneficial effects in athletes.
