Abstract
Purpose Hypoxic training, which has demonstrated benefits in endurance athletes by enhancing oxygen delivery and utilization, may have specific applications for weight-class sports such as Taekwondo. Athletes in these sports must improve aerobic fitness while maintaining muscle mass to optimize performance and meet strict weight requirements. However, the effects of different hypoxic conditions on aerobic performance and body composition in Taekwondo athletes remain unclear. Methods Thirty elite male Taekwondo athletes were randomly assigned to three groups: normobaric normoxia (NN, sea-level conditions), normobaric hypoxia (NH, inspired oxygen fraction of 14.5%), and hypobaric hypoxia (HH, 560 torr, simulating an altitude of approximately 2,500 m). All participants completed moderate-intensity aerobic training (75% HRmax), five times per week, for 60 minutes per session over four weeks. Aerobic performance (VO2max, exercise time, HRmax) was assessed via graded exercise testing (GXT), and body composition (body weight, muscle mass, body fat percentage) was measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer. Results VO2max significantly increased in all groups (p < 0.05). Exercise time significantly increased only in the HH group (p < 0.05). HRmax significantly decreased in the NN and HH groups (p < 0.05). Significant reductions in body weight and muscle mass were observed only in the NH group (p < 0.05). Conclusion Four weeks of moderate-intensity aerobic training improved aerobic performance across all conditions but resulted in muscle mass reduction under NH. Training programs for Taekwondo athletes should carefully balance aerobic enhancement and muscle preservation.
