반려동물의 시적 구현이 갖는 ‘동물로의 전회’ 가능성 검토 - 최근 발표된 동물 시를 중심으로

‘동물로의 전회(the animal turn)’ 또는 ‘비인간주체로의 전회(the nonhuman turn)’라는 용어의 등장은 근대를 열었던 인간중심주의를 극복하려는 지적 변동과 관련이 있다고 할 수 있다. 문학 역시 이런 지적 변화에 어떤 식으로든 영향을 받을 수밖에 없으며, ‘동물로의 전회’는 문학의 생산과 독해 모두에 변화를 가져오고 있다. 다만 반려동물을 소재로 한 시집들의 경우 비평적 관심을 그다지 받지 못하고 있는데, 여기에는 반려동물과의 일상성이 인간중심주의를 극복하기 위한 잠재성을 갖추고 있지 못하다는 견해들이 주류를 이루고 있는 듯하다. 본고는 반려동물이라는 특수한 위치를 고려하지 않고, ‘동물’이라는 메타적 기호를 동일하게 적용하여 반려동물과의 일상을 다룬 시를 독해하는 방식이 지닌 오류에 주목하였다. 또한 반려동물의 일상성이 ‘동물로의 전회’ 또는 ‘인간중심주의 극복 가능성’을 담지할 수 있는 가능성에 주목하여 최근 발표된 반려동물 시들을 분석하였다. 분석한 시들은 반려동물이 ‘동물’로부터 자신과 관계 맺는 독립된 개체로 연결되는 시간을 형상화하면서, 그들의 타자성이 속해 있는 다른 세계가 존재하고 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 반려동물과 반려인들이 공유하는 일상이 발생시키는 ‘접촉지대’ 안에서 두 개체가 교환하는 물리적 교감과 소통의 (불)가능성을 보여주기도 했다. 반려동물의 일상을 다룬 시가 동물로의 전회와 연결될 수 있는 지점은 바로 인간과의 ‘동일성의 가능성’을 보여주는 것이 아니라, 동물의 ‘소중한 타자성’을 가장 가까운 거리에서 인간에게 깨닫게 하는 데 있다.
Abstract
It can be said that terminologies like ‘the animal turn’ or ‘the nonhuman turn’ show intellectual change to overcome anthropocentricism which opened the modern era. This atmosphere caused the traditional relationship between human beings and animals to be changed. Foucault, Derrida, Latour and Haraway made the philosophical basis for this intellectual change. Literature also can’t avoid this wave and production and criticism of literature have experienced it. However poems on companion animals can’t get much attention from criticism. There might be some prejudice that dailiness of the poems doesn’t have any potential to get over anthropocentricism. I think that reading the poems on companion animals under the same standard as ‘Animal’ may have fallacy. I hypothesized that companion animal poetry can achieve ‘the animal turn’ or overcome anthropocentricism. So I analysed the recently-released poems on companion animals. The poems embodied the companion animals as an independent entity from ‘Animal’ and showed another world that their otherness belongs to. Also the dailiness between human beings and animals created the contact zone where two entities exchanged physical communion and got the (im)possibilities of communication. The poems on companion animals can accomplish ‘the animal turn’ when they show the valuable otherness of animals from the nearest side of human beings, not showing the possibility of identity similar to human beings.
