Abstract
China asserts “indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters.” It bases its sovereignty claims on discovery, longstanding historical use and administrative control. China supports its claims by referencing maps with nine-dashed line, archaeological findings and historical records. However, none of the evidence is especially compelling under modern international law, which favors the sovereignty claims of those states best able to prove continuous and effective administration. But China has still been seeking to consolidate its claims in the South China Sea. Since 2009, the competition for maritime rights in the South China ea has emerged as the most important security issue in East Asia. Now China has been following a long-term strategy with its so called ‘salami-slicing strategy’ or “Cabbage strategy” to increase its power in the South China Sea,” “This ‘salami-slicing strategy’ focus on a long-term strategy but with each move, only a small piece and increase of territory is gained in a way that invokes the smallest reaction possible from opponents.” The previous example of this strategy is the dispute of Scarborough Shoal and Artificial Islands in the South China Sea which were based on slow expansion of territory and the construction of various military bases in the small islands on the pretext of allowing for better logistics and monitoring.
