본 연구는 2017년 마크롱의 대통령 당선을 중도 노선에 초점을 맞추어 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 프랑스 중도 정당은 제5공화국 출범 이후 드골주의와 차별화되는 자유주의 이념을 발전시켰으나 독립적인 정체성을 유지하지 못하고 2000년대 지지를 상실했다. 반면 마크롱과 전진하는 공화국은 ‘우파도 좌파도 아닌’ 입장을 토대로 집권에 성공했기 때문에, 2017년 선거 국면에서 중도 정당이 확보했던 새로운 흥행요소가 무엇이었는지를 진단할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 마크롱이 기존 중도 정당 이념을 어떻게 계승하고 변형했는지를 분석하고, 중도이념이 2017년 프랑스 선거에서 어떤 전략적인 효과를 가졌는지 평가했다. 중도 자유주의 이념은 기성 정당에 대한 불신을 반영했을 뿐만 아니라 부상하는 극우 포퓰리즘에 대한 대안을 의미했다. 따라서 마크롱의 중도주의는 세계화와 유럽통합을 둘러싼 입장 대립을 효과적으로 동원할 수 있었던 핵심적인 선거 전략으로 기능할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This article aims at analyzing Emmanuel Macron's victory in the French elections by focusing on his centrist platform. While French centrist parties had oriented in economic liberalism which have been differentiated from Gaulism since the 5th Republic, it became failed to maintain independent identity and lose the public support in 2000s. However, Macron and his party, Le République en Marche, could seize power through 'neither left nor right' positioning, hence new performance factors of the centrist party in 2017 French elections need be analyzed in depth. This article explores about how Macron succeeded and transformed former centrist parties' ideology and what the strategic impacts of centrism on the 2017 election were. Liberal centrism not only reflected distrust of existing party system but also stood for alternatives to emerging extreme right-wing populism. Therefore, Centrism of Macron could operate as vital electoral strategy that turn the conflict over globalization and European integration to their advantage.
