Abstract

First of all, The purpose of the paper is to analyze, through the economic and social transformation process of Greece after the austerity, that austerity policy isn't functioning contrary to the conventional belief that restoring national competitiveness. The austerity worsens the economic situation rather than helping the economy, with the most vulnerable being the most damaging. The second purpose is to show that austerity is not only an economic and social problem, but also a political problem. Thus, we analyze the political implications of the austerity, taking the example of Greece's first general election in July 2019, which was held for the first time since Greece graduated from the bailout system in August 2018. In general, in fiscal consolidation countries that implement the austerity, policies are established to be more advantageous to the 'market people' rather than the 'state people'. Investor confidence is more important than the loyalty of the people, and debt repayment pushes public services. In these countries, people don’t access to the political or ideological resources needed to challenge, the political disillusionment of voters gradually rises. To this end, this paper deals with the political implications of the austerity with theoretical discussion in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 analyzes Greece’s economic situation and its social consequences after the austerity. Chapter 4 analyzes the results of the Greece general election in July 2019 and its political implications(formation of new bipartisan system and rise of abstention rate).
