Abstract

This article attempts to explain their responses to 2008 fiscal crisis shown by Spain, Greece, Portugal and the political choices of voters (political costs from the perspective of political parties). Discontent with political parties is a global trend, but Southern European democratic countries need to consider factors such as state-led capitalism, political patronage and fragmented party systems. Faced with an economic crisis under the condition that these historical relics were maintained, voters in Spain and Greece demanded that the ruling party or major opposition parties pay political costs, holding them responsible for failing economic policies. At the same time, it provided opportunities for new political parties, especially anti-party, far right, far left, and even racist positions. The political consideration paid in Spain was the remarkable weakening of the Socialist Party, a traditional major party, and the rise of regionalist or ideological parties as an alternative. In Greece, the approval rating dropped sharply to the level of the collapse of the Socialist Party, and Tlike Spain, various new political parties entered the parliament. In both Spain and Greece, major political parties that competitively pursued popular policies with each other were virtually punished strongly, and a polarized multi-party system was formed in which far-right, far-left, and regionalist minor parties filled the position. However, major political parties such as Portugal's Socialist Party(PS) and Social Democratic Party(PSD), which were relatively weak in political patroage and cooperative in the process of a sharp transition to austerity policy, were rarely punished, and showed a stable multi-party system with few newly established parties. Through this, it can be seen that the political costs of punishment and compensation differed depending on the ability and method of responding to the economic crisis, and also affected changes in the political party system.
