Abstract
The 2023 Greek general election was a landslide victory for New Democracy and a defeat for Syriza. In the new economic conditions created by Syriza’s coalition, the ND government was able to implement stable economic policies, which were viewed positively by voters. On the other hand, while most parties, including PASOK, increased their share of the vote, Syriza suffered a significant loss. In the second round of elections, the ND gained bonus seats and won a majority, while the votes and seats of the second and smaller parties were fragmented. This suggests that a one-party dominance system has been established, albeit temporarily. However, with the exception of the bonus seats, this does not deviate from the trend since the late 2000s, when the two-party system was transformed into a multi-party system. On the ideological spectrum, European issues have weakened considerably, reducing the influence of the populist cleavage. As a result, the left-right cleavage over economic issues has come to the fore. However, the populist cleavage has not disappeared, and it has the potential to resurface depending on the circumstances.
