Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of European Parliament elections, with a particular focus on the results of the 10th European Parliament elections in June 2024. It considers the second-order nature of these elections to explore the factors influencing the vote share of Eurosceptic parties and the extent of protest voting observed. The analysis shows a correlation between economic factors, such as inflation concerns, and the vote share of Eurosceptic parties, although these factors alone have limited explanatory power. A comparison of vote shares between national and European elections shows that protest voting was particularly pronounced in Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In contrast, protest voting was less pronounced in Italy and Spain, while in Poland and Hungary the ruling parties maintained relatively strong support. The rise of Eurosceptic members in the European Parliament may challenge the stability of the EU framework, but their legislative influence appears limited. Centrist and moderate groups remain in the majority and often cooperate on key issues. Nevertheless, Eurosceptic groups could act as swing voters on issues such as environmental policy, immigration and refugee policy, border control, and protectionist economic and industrial measures. As right-wing sentiment rises across Europe, the shift toward more nation-centered politics is becoming more apparent. These dynamics are likely to shape voting patterns and policy decisions in the European Parliament. This underscores the importance of closely tracking the evolving European political landscape and the resulting shifts in governance and policy direction.
