Corpus-based Analysis on the Patterns of Korean Interpretation of Chinese Passive Sentences: Focused on the Discrepancy of Voice

The objective of this paper is twofold: to understand the discrepancy of voice through examining the patterns of Korean Interpretation of Chinese passive sentences, and to explore the factors and conditions that cause this phenomenon. Passive voice is one of the major conceptual categories of a language, and passive sentences are usually taught as a main grammar construction. Equally in Chinese, it’s not hard to find that most of Chinese grammar books have illustrated syntactic structure and the function of passive sentences. However, there are few mentions about the discrepancy of voice in Korean Interpretation of Chinese passive sentences. Linguistic expressions show how we construe events. Then, the phenomenon of Chinese passive sentences is changed into other voiced sentences when we interpret them into Korean. This can be regarded as the difference in the way of thinking rather than of grammar structure. This paper is formed by the following discussions: (1) to draw out the patterns of Korean Interpretation of Chinese passive sentences; (2) to analyze the distribution of the patterns of Korean interpretation of Chinese passive sentences; (3) to illustrate the conditions which cause the discrepancy of voice between Korean and Chinese.
