Abstract
Sima Qian expressed his intention to write an article that penetrates the principles of ‘heaven and man’ and ‘ancient and modern’ through shiji. It covered all the history that could be collected from Wudi五帝to the present emperor Wudi武帝, and in addition to the person's biography, shu書and biao表were added to organize the knowledge of the time. In some cases, several people were recorded together in the form of hezhuan合傳, and the ‘Laozi Hanfei liezhuan’, which will be examined in this paper, is one of them. Sima Qian included in the same biographies Laozi, the founder of Taoism who pursued freedom, and Han Fei, the founder of Legalism who sought to maintain social order through strict criminal laws. Scholars who held a critical view of this dismissed it as a fallacy of deviation, while those who supported it attempted to understand their union from an academic or socio-historical perspective. Han Fei's annotation of Laozi was intended to strengthen his own logic by using Laozi's words. Meanwhile, Sima Qian tried to console himself through Han Fei's biography. Their writings have in common that they organized existing ideas and the works of predecessors according to their own needs. When discussing the lives of philosophers such as Laozi and Han Fei, Sima Qian's interest was not in revealing the essence of their thought or in finding and recording the most reliable biographies. The most important thing was to effectively convey Sima Qian's message throughout their lives.
