Abstract

This study examines the transcultural exchanges between Qing China and Joseon Korea in the eighteenth century by comparing Coromandel screens and Joseon court paintings, particularly those featuring Guo Ziyi’s banquet. Utilizing the framework of the "iconic circuit," it investigates how visual motifs, symbols, and artistic techniques circulated and were reinterpreted across geographic and cultural boundaries in early modern East Asia. Although Coromandel screens were unlikely to have been directly imported to Joseon, their motifs and visual principles influenced Korean art through other media such as lacquerware, woodblock prints, and decorative arts. This research highlights the processes of adaptation and transformation through which Korean artists aligned Chinese visual elements with local aesthetic values and ceremonial contexts. By focusing on the fluid exchange of images and the reinterpretation of cultural icons, this study contributes to a nuanced understanding of early modern East Asian visual culture as a dynamic network of shared practices and regional distinctiveness.
