Abstract

This paper reexamines Japanese perception of Goryeo in the 12th-13th centuries through tales about a person who went to Goryeo, which emerged in the process of easing negative perceptions of Goryeo in the Medieval Japan. In particular, it focused on the story of Tachibana no Masamichi, the 10th-century literary bureaucrat. A survey of four tale collections containing the story of Masamichi shows that, although he historically died in Japan, an early 12th-century version portrays him retiring into seclusion and crossing over to Goryeo to become an immortal, while by the mid-13th century the story had evolved into one in which he went to Goryeo and attains the rank of chancellor. These narrative developments and transmission changes are interpreted as an idealization of Goryeo as a “land of opportunity,” reflecting the Heian aristocratic society’s restrictions on the advancement of its literary bureaucrat class and their psychological desire to overcome and be compensated for those limitations. Ultimately, the image of Goryeo in these folktales mirrors a yearning to break through the closed nature of Japan’s domestic reality and illustrates shifts in social hierarchy and international perception during the Heian‚Kamakura transition.
