1989년 천안문 사건은 그 항쟁이 ‘천안문 사건’으로 명명되므로 베이징에만 집중되어 이해되는 경향이 있고 주로 대학생들이 주도하여 민주화를 요구한 시위로 여겨진다. 하지만 당시 상황을 자세히 살펴보면, 그 항쟁은 베이징에서만 일어난 일은 결코 아니었다. 당시 시위는 전국의 여러 도시에서 벌어졌으며, 상당 도시에서 학생 시위만 있었던 것이 아니라 노동자와 일반 시민들도 대거 참여한 항쟁이었다. 사건 후반부에 이르러 전체적인 양상이 베이징 천안문 광장의 단식 시위로 집중된 경향이 있지만, 그 국면에서도 상당수의 광장 단식 시위대는 지방에서 올라온 학생들이기도 했다. 시위의 양상 또한 베이징에서는 6월 3일에서 4일에 이르는 학살의 밤 이전에는 비교적 비폭력 기조가 유지되었으나 여타 지방 도시들에서는 격렬하게 당국과 시위대가 충돌한 양상도 있었으며, 지역의 요구가 담긴 구호가 외쳐지기도 했다. 이 연구에서는 당시 상하이와 청두를 비롯한 다른 도시들에서의 시위 양상에 대한 조사를 통해 1989년 천안문 사건이 당시 베이징에서 일어난 정치적인 반대 운동이라는 해석을 넘어서 1980년대 도시에서의 개혁 정책이 혼란에 빠지게 되어 사회 불평등과 인플레이션, 부정부패 등이 만연하게 되자 그에 저항하는 도시민의 사회경제적 저항이기도 하다는 점을 보려주려 한다. 그리고 당시 시위참여자들이 폭넓게 외쳤던 ‘언론의 자유’나 체제 개혁의 요구들이 기존 사회주의적 체제를 전복시키고자 했던 의도가 아니라 이미 헌법에 보장되어 있던 사회주의적 민주주의를 회복시키려는 운동이기도 했다는 점도 살펴보려 한다.
Abstract
The 1989 social movement is called the “Tiananmen Incident”, so it tends to be focused only in Beijing and is largely believed to be led by university students to demand democratization. But looking closely at the situation, the uprising did not only take place in Beijing, and it took place in cities across the country. There were not only student protests in many cities, but also protests involving many workers and ordinary citizens. The demonstrations also showed a relatively nonviolent tone in Beijing before the June 3-4 massacre, but violent clashes between authorities and protesters in other provincial cities, with slogans containing local demands. This study seeks to look into the patterns of demonstrations in Shanghai, Chengdu and other cities at the time, to show that the struggle was also a socioeconomic resistance of urbanites who resisted social injustice, inflation and corruption. And this study examines the demands for freedom of speech and reform of the system that the protesters claimed at the time were not intended to overthrow the existing socialist system, but were also campaigns to restore socialist democracy, which was already guaranteed by the Constitution.
