중국 지식인들의 1989 천안문 사건 재해석:자유민주주의 운동론과 신좌파적 해석을 중심으로

1989년 천안문 사건은 중국과 중국 공산당을 근본부터 뒤흔든 사건이었음에도 불구하고 중국 대륙에서는 그에 관해 논하는 것은 금기시되어왔다. 그로 인해 천안문 사건에 대한 언급이나 연구는 주로 중국 대륙 외부에서 이뤄져왔다. 중국 외부의 기존의 천안문 사건에 대한 연구 경향들은 대체로 시민사회론적 접근/근대화론적 접근이 주를 이루었으며, 중국 문화의 특수성을 강조하는 전통 문화적 접근이나 정치 엘리트 파벌 간의 권력투쟁으로 바라보는 관점 역시 존재했다. 하지만 이런 그동안의 연구들은 천안문 사건의 당사자들의 경험과 얘기들을 많이 담고 있지 못하다는 외재적인 한계를 지니고 있었다. 이 글에서는 1989 천안문 사건을 직접 주도하거나 경험했던 중국 지식인들의 천안문 사건 재해석 담론에 주목하여, 그 입장들을 억압적인 중국의 국가를 비판하는 자유민주주의적인 관점에서 해석하는 입장과 보다 계급적인 측면에 주목하여 당시 시장화 정책을 비판하는 신좌파적 입장으로 나누어 분석한다. 또 이들 각각의 입장에서의 1989 천안문 사건 해석들이 현재 중국에 대한 정치사회적 분석에 줄 수 있는 함의들을 검토해본다.
Abstract
Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 is still taboo in China. The incident was quite serious enough to shake the root of China and Chinese Communist Party, but mentioning the incident was taboo and has been forgotten in silence over time. Existing researches on Tiananmen Square Protests, especially Western researches tend not to overcome the theory of civil society/theory of modernization approach. Especially in the same period of late 1980, there were extensive student led democratic movements in East Asian Developmental Dictatorships including Korea and Taiwan, and anti-socialist revolution in Eastern Europe, which led Tiananmen Square incident placed in the similar context, and raised the tendency to understand the incident by the civil society/modernization approach. But, it is not easy to define the characteristics and significance of Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 like otherwise public revolts. To overcome the limit of a Western liberal view and reinterpret Tiananmen Square Protest of 1989 critically, one of the most important is to review the analysis and criticism of Tiananmen Incident made by Chinese critical intellectuals unnoticed concerning their researches and introduce them. So, this study reviewed reinterpretations made by Chinese intellectuals in two ways; (1) liberal democratic view such as Wang Dan, Liu Xiaobo, (2) new leftist view such as Wang Hui, Wang Shaoguang and Li Minqi.
