초록

After reform and open policy, the relation between chinese intellectuals and the state showed compromising and cooperative feature rather than confrontational feature despite the increase of autonomous realm. Especially after the peak of democratizaton movement of Tiananmen Square in 1989, any activities of resistance such as anti-CCP movement almost disappeared after that period. On one hand of the cooperative and coexisting relation between intellectuals and the state, there is an aspect of weakened spirit of social criticism of the intellectuals due to the tendency of professionalization and commercialization of intellectuals resulting from the marketization. On the other hand, it’s because the responding strategy of the state (dual strategy of control and inclusion) was effective. Presupposing the nonresistant and cooperative attitude of the Chinese intellectuals towards the state that was analyzed in this study, it suggests a high possibility of ‘gradual change from top-down’ or maintaining unstable condition (mixing condition) for a considerable period of time in the future path of China’s political democratization rather than the path of ‘radical change from bottom-up’.
