Abstract

Majority of Korean language education system for foreigners such as classes and books are designed for foreigners from English speaking country. Thus, ignoring necessity of education focused on its language group and characteristics of different native languages, Korean language education in terms of education for different language group is currently facing an obstacle, especially the Korean language education for minorities. To determine whether the Spanish speaking foreign residents in Korea are classified as the minorities, Statistics are re-organized having Spanish speaking country as its common denominator. As a result, the number of both arrivals and residents are much above 0.1%. The awareness that now it is absolutely required to have in our system the adequate education of Korean language for foreign residents from Spanish speaking countries is necessary. This study, upon analyzing their adaptation strategies for learning Korean, classifies various stages into accommodation, rejection, suspension, and observation. Also, it establishes appropriate teaching methods of Korean language education according to the adaptation strategies of their choice and based on each category of foreign residents such as legal or illegal and short-term or long term. Korean language education for foreign residents from Spanish speaking countries must be dealt with greater importance, as the same degree the Spanish language education for Korean speakers do.
