Abstract
The Catharsis that Aristotle referred to in Poietica was generally understood to purify negative emotions in pity and fear caused by tragic events. In this point of view, polis aim to particular educational effects by catharsis. They wanted to make spectator’s mind stable and harmless for the community through eliminating or purifying individual passions. On the other hand, catharsis also can understand that it emancipates spectator from existing order. In this regard, Lacan suggests a new perspective on catharsis by his interpretation of Antigone. According to Lacan, the catharsis that spectators experience in Antigone’s tragic events does not discharge unstable emotions and recover stability. Rather, Antigone makes the spectator go through a process of catharsis that clean up the imaginary structure established by Other’s desire. Based on Lacan’s interpretation of Antigone, we can present another perspective on the educational aspects of catharsis. From the perspective of this paper, catharsis of tragedy is educational that it can create a true subject who does not deceit one’s desire.
