Abstract

This study rereads Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus through the lens of Lacanian psychoanalysis. Drawing on Lacan’s anti-Aristotelian and anti-Hegelian theory of tragedy, it illuminates Oedipus as a subject of drive who refuses reconciliation with fate and resists assimilation into the symbolic order. By aligning the ‘inhuman’ Oedipus with Sophocles’ anti-humanist perspective, this study reveals a tragic hero who severs the metonymic chain of signifiers. In doing so, it deconstructs the conventional interpretation that reads the two plays as a developmental narrative driven by character transformation, thereby exposing the fundamental consistency of Oedipus’s characteristics. Oedipus’s act of self-blinding is interpreted not as the establishment of the subject of the signifier but as an ethical act. Furthermore, by examining Oedipus’s ‘special death’ on two levels—symbolic and actual—it situates Oedipus as a preexisting psychoanalytic ethical subject. By reinterpreting Oedipus’s unconventional actions and words, this study offers a renewed perspective on the character of Oedipus and broadens the horizon of understanding of the text. Above all, it challenges the prevailing interpretive framework that reduces the plays to a humanist narrative of the life cycle and to a stereotypical interpretation of acceptance or reconciliation with an inevitable fate.
