Abstract

With a one-time failure in an entrance exam, students in South Korea fall into misfortune and consistently suffer from its consequences. The purpose of this study is to provide an interpretation of the realities of Korean education by exploring the concept of tragedy in Aristotle's Poetics. This study is based on the idea that this Korean educational phenomenon is analogous to a structure of tragedy in which (a) a hero is bound to fall into misery in spite of his or her effort and (b) just one incident leads a hero to an deeply painful situation. Especially, this study examines the concept ‘hamartia’ which is a prime cause leading a hero to the tragic downfall in Poetics, in order to ask whether it is fair for students to experience painful situations because of one test. In Nicomachean Ethics and Poetics, hamartia means a state of ignorance which anyone is likely to live in, and which results in an unwished situation. Considering that tragic emotions are pity and fear, a tragic situation which hamartia triggers has an implication that the situation is undeserved. Feeling undeserved means that though hamartia is merely an ignorant state anyone can experience, it is unjust to consider the state guilt and to take inflicting distress for granted. This also can apply to a tragic situation represented in educational circumstances. It is not right to justify pains students undergo or simply stigmatize them because they do not know something. In particular, from an educational point of view, a state of ignorance is natural for human being. Therefore, we should regard the ignorant state as an opportunity for better education rather than a failure.
