Abstract
· Research topics: This paper analyzed the effects of Information Technology and Information control in authoritarian regimes on the democratic index. · Research background:This research will analysis how difference of Information Technology and Information control level influence the level of democracy among authoritarian regimes. · Differences from prior research: previous researches usually focus on the case studies dealing with the effect of economic development on the democratic level but this paper focus on the quantitative methods to find the effect of IT level and Information control on the democratic index. · Research method: I set Information Technology as an independent variable measuring the number of cell phone distribution and the Internet user rates. I also set Information control as an independent variable measuring the government's censorship on the media and media's criticism against a government. In addition, I set external factors and internal factors as the control variables. In order to analyze the effects of the variables on the democratic index, I used the democratization index of 41 authoritarian regimes over the period 1990-2018. · Research results: The analysis shows that cell phone and media's criticism variables have a positive impact on democratic index. That means Information technology and Information control have positive impact on the democratic index. Meanwhile, Internet user rate and government's censorship variables do not have a significant impact on the democratic index. Among the control variables such as external and internal factors, U.S. intervention, the U.S. aid, the duration of dictatorship, income inequality, amount of trade and urbanization variables have significant impacts on democratic index. These results offer important implications about the Information technology and control on the democratic index. · Contribution points and expected effects: This paper analyzed the effect of the authoritarian regimes' Information Technology levels and Information control on the democratic level and contributes to the development of democracy.
