Abstract

From Rousseau’s point of view, the purpose of education is to raise humans who use reason guided by conscience and cultivate inner virtues. In Émile, Jean-Jacques provides the best support for Émile to lose his inappropriate passions and grow as a human being. However, Rousseau suggests that this type of education is specifically a relationship between father and son. In contrast, he presents Sophie’s education as distinct from Émile’s and tailored for women. Notably, Rousseau’s views on women’s education contain elements that could be criticized as sexist from today’s perspective. A more productive approach to reading Rousseau is to critique his sexist views on women’s education while boldly attempting to rectify them and then reexamining his work. By reading Rousseau more like Rousseau, we can develop more diverse thoughts about equal education. In this regard, Rousseau demonstrates through Julie in New Heloise that women can play a central role as educators. From the perspective of this article, it does not matter whether the educator is male or female in Rousseau’s education. What matters is the existence of a conscientious and virtuous human being.
