Abstract
This study examines manuscript materials of the Yadam(野談) tradition, which occupied an important place in the development of late Joseon narrative literature, focusing on how the presence of supplementary texts incorporated into the original texts should be understood. Previous research on Yadam(野談) has mainly concentrated on clarifying textual lineages and establishing authoritative versions, while comparatively little attention has been paid to the subsidiary materials added in the process of transcription. In this context, the present paper introduces unexpected textual findings discovered in the course of examining various Yadam(野談) manuscripts, including the Yeungnam University version of 『Chonghwa(叢話)』, the Daegu Catholic University version of 『Kyesejaprok(溪西雜錄)』, the Korea University Mansong Collection version of 『Seonicheop(仙異帖)』, and the Korea University Sinam Collection version of 『Paektusangi(白頭山記)』. In the Yeungnam University version of 『Chonghwa(叢話)』, new tales such as Choe Seokhang’s Strange Appearance(崔錫恒形貌奇怪) and Yun Gwangsin, the Son of Vice Minister Yun Donghyeong(尹光莘參判東衡之子也) were identified, necessitating further reconsideration of this manuscript’s significance. The Daegu Catholic University version of 『Kyesejaprok(溪西雜錄)』 contains at its end the <Mungyeonrok(聞見錄)>, a set of twenty-four short anecdotes that reveal distinctively Yadam(野談)-like narrative qualities. The Mansong Collection version of 『Seonicheop(仙異帖)』 recompiled several tales from 『Eouyadam(於于野談)』, while also including a new work, <SeonnyeoHongssi-jeon(仙女洪氏傳)>, thereby exhibiting characteristics of the fantastic biography(神怪傳奇). Furthermore, the Sinam Collection version of 『Paektusangi(白頭山記)』 brings together travel writing, historical tales, fantastic narratives, and Yadam(野談), forming a unique collection that provides insights into the diversity of late Joseon narrative prose. These cases demonstrate that Yadam(野談) manuscripts should not be regarded merely as variants to be classified, but rather as complex texts in which original and supplementary materials interact to construct new networks of meaning. Accordingly, studies of classical narrative literature must consider not only the main texts but also the modes of compilation and addition that reflect the compiler’s intentions and the cultural-historical context. Such a perspective underscores the importance of ongoing discovery and analysis of manuscript sources in broadening the horizon of Yadam(野談) and classical narrative research.
