Abstract
This article examines the visits of Daesik (Muslim) groups to Goryeo recorded in 1024, 1025, and 1040 focusing on two dimensions: Southeast Asian intermediation and the Song dynasty’s maritime policy shift. The Song court’s 1023 decision to formalize the Guangzhou sea route enhanced the stability of South China Sea passages and opened a corridor through which qiaojü-based merchant communities in Southeast Asian ports could extend their activities to the Korean Peninsula. The Goryeosa records of these three visits are reinterpreted here not as instances of conventional tribute or trade, but as diaspora-mediated contacts embedded in maritime networks. By situating them within a triadic linkage of Song–Southeast Asia–Goryeo, this study moves beyond a Sino-centric bilateral frame and highlights the possibility of a maritime-network perspective. In doing so, it broadens the analytical scope of Goryeo maritime history and illuminates the interconnected configuration of the regional order in the early eleventh century.
