Abstract
The Toegye Jip (退溪集) was first published in 1600 as the Gyeongja edition (庚子本) and was subsequently reprinted in 1724 and 1843. The Reprinting Diary of Toegye’s Collected Works (退溪先生文集重刊時日記), which documents the 1843 reprinting process, provides a detailed account of the publication of the Toegye Jip Gyemyo edition (退溪集癸卯重刊本), organized under the leadership of Dosan Seowon (陶山書院). This study examines the reprinting process of the Toegye Jip(退溪集) based on this diary, focusing on the participants, division of labor, and patterns of cooperation within the local community. The project was initially planned in 1837 but was postponed due to various circumstances; it was formally launched in the spring of 1843 and completed within the same year. The reprinting was a well-organized, large-scale undertaking involving 424 participants—including central and local officials, scholars inheriting Toegye’s intellectual lineage, and his descendants—who shared specific responsibilities. Within a remarkably short period of six months, thirty-two volumes were published, making this a notable example of the rapid completion of an extensive literary collection. Although financial difficulties arose during the project and various efforts were made to address them, limited financial resources prevented the original plan from being fully realized. Nevertheless, this reprinting project, undertaken 120 years after the 1724 edition, provided an opportunity to reaffirm the social cohesion and pride of Toegye’s intellectual lineage, his descendants, and the local community. It represents not merely a publication project but a collective endeavor to preserve and disseminate Toegye’s thought.
