Abstract

This study examines the publication process, associated costs, and the roles of key persons and woodblock engravers involved in the 1817 Jeongchuk edition(丁丑改刊本) of Toegyejip(退溪集), based primarily on the Seonsaeng Munjip Gaegan Ilgi(先⽣文集改刊⽇記). Originally published in 1600, approximately 30 years after the death of Yi Hwang (Toegye), Toegyejip(退溪集) was subsequently reprinted in 1724 (Gapjin edition) and 1843 (Gyemyo edition), playing a significant role in preserving and transmitting Toegye’s Confucian thought and scholarship. In 1817, due to the deterioration of the Gapjin edition (甲⾠本) woodblocks and a request from the Royal Lectures Office (Gyeongyeoncheong, 經筵廳) for a presentation copy, a reprinting project was launched at Dosan Seowon (陶⼭書院). This process was meticulously recorded in the Seonsaeng Munjip Gaegan Ilgi (先⽣文集改刊⽇記), covering a period of approximately eight months from January to August 1817. Rather than re-carving the entire set, the 1817 Jeongchuk edition (丁丑改刊本) selectively replaced approximately 200 severely damaged woodblocks. The project was completed through discussions and decisions by local literati, management by the dodogam(都都監) and dogam (都監), the participation of engravers and scribes, and the procurement of carving expenses. Under the supervision of Yi I-soon, head of Dosan Seowon(陶⼭書院), and Dodogam(都都監) Yi Gwi-un, the chief engraver Kim Eung-jun led a team of 16 woodblock engravers from the Andong and Yeongju regions. Temple-affiliated engravers from Gwangheungsa(廣興寺) and Yongdamsa(⿓潭寺) also played a significant role in the project. Among them, Wonmin(元敏), a monk and engraver from Gwangheungsa(廣興寺), actively participated in the woodblock carving of Toegyejip(退溪集), along with Bomin(普敏), In addition to this project, they were extensively involved in various carving works throughout the Andong region.
