Abstract
This study explores the internal formation and external practices of craftsmanship consciousness by analyzing the life histories of five traditional technology bearers in Goryeong-gun, including potters, roof-tile makers, a blacksmith, and a musical instrument craftsman. The analysis reveals three main findings. First, the emergence and continuation of traditional technologies are enabled by complex macro-level conditions such as geographical and environmental factors, historical foundations of iron and pottery industries, and the region’s cultural policies and industrial structures. Second, at the micro level, the bearers internalize craftsmanship through repetitive labor, self-discipline, and continuous research and learning, embodying their skills through daily practice. Third, within the dual structure of cultural heritage policy and the traditional craft market, they strategically perform and display their craftsmanship identities, emphasizing the traditionality, artistry, and cultural value of their works to secure recognition and legitimacy between institutional evaluation and market valuation. This study highlights that the transmission of traditional technology should not be confined to the level of individual capability or personality but understood as a socio-cultural practice embedded in historical, environmental, and institutional conditions. By doing so, it reveals that craftsmanship consciousness operates not merely as a personal ethic but as a culturally performed act shaped and reconstituted within broader structural contexts.
