이 논문은 제주학의 역사적 발자취를 제주학 관련 연구기관 설립과 제주학 관련 전문 학술지의 게재 논문들을 통해 최근 제주학 연구가 어떠한 방향으로 조직화되고 있는 지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 지역학으로서의 제주학이 가지는 학문적 정체성을 가늠해 보고, 그 성과를 점검해 보고자 하였다. 특히 제주학의 학문적 성과를 정리하는데 있어, 제주대학교 탐라문화연구원과 제주특별자치도 산하 제주학연구센터를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 논의를 통해 향후 제주학의 과제와 전망을 제시해 보고자 하였다. 지역학은 중앙 중심의 패러다임을 넘어 지역의 다양성과 정체성을 탐구하고, 이를 통해 세계와 소통하는 실천적 학문이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 제주학은 제주가 가진 고유성과 특수성을 토대로 세계적 보편성을 지향할 때, 그 가치와 의미가 진정성을 획득할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 과거의 시공간에 축적된 다양한 자료를 현재의 시공간 속에서 더욱 적극적으로 재해석해 나가야할 필요성이 여기에 있다. 이를 위해 가장 우선해야 할 것은 제주학이 가진 지역중심적 배타성을 지양하고, 타 지역과의 연대를 지속적으로 추진해 나가는 것이다. 이러한 노력이 계속될 때 제주학은 가까운 미래에 진정한 글로컬학으로서 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper sought to trace the historical development of Jeju Studies and, by examining the establishment of Jeju Studies–related research institutes and recent articles published in specialized journals in the field, to investigate the directions in which research activities related to Jeju Studies are being organized. Through this, the study sought to discern the scholarly identity of Jeju Studies within area studies and to take stock of its accomplishments. Based on this discussion, the study sought to present the tasks of Jeju Studies and its future prospects. Jeju Studies can attain genuine value and significance when, grounded in Jeju’s uniqueness and particularity, it aspires to global universality. There is a need to more proactively reinterpret the diverse materials accumulated in the spatiotemporal contexts of the past within the spatiotemporal context of the present. To achieve this, the first priority should be to overcome Jeju Studies’ region-centric exclusivism and to pursue ongoing collaboration with other regions. If these efforts continue, Jeju Studies can position itself as a genuine glocal field of study in the near future.
