제주학 정립의 방향과 과제

제주학의 정립 문제는 이미 많이 논의되었으나, 이 문제에 대해서는 사실 아 직까지도 정답을 제출하기 힘들어 보인다. 그러나 한 가지 분명하게 말할 수 있는 것은, 학적인 체계를 세울 정도의 질적 수준을 보장하는 논문이 집적되어 야 구체적인 논의가 가능한 것이지, 선언적으로 ‘제주학’을 정립하더라도 실질 연구가 없으면 그 생명은 오래 가지 않는다는 것이다. 소위 제주를 소재적으로 다루는 연구나, 학제적 성격의 연구도 마찬가지이다. 다루는 수준이 높다면 소 재적 차원이나 학제적 성격의 연구도 제주학의 정립에 결정적 도움이 될 것이 며, 반대로 그렇지 않다면 아무리 제주학을 앞에 내세우더라도 별 의미를 가질 수 없으며, 오히려 학문 분야의 성립에 방해가 될 것이다. 연구의 문제로 들어가면, 대상에 대한 직관적 인식이 곧 그 연구의 질을 보 장하지는 않는다는 사실을 명심할 필요가 있다. 지역 연구의 경우, 특수성을 그 기반으로 하는 것은 분명하지만 그것이 직관적 특수성으로 끝나서는 곤란하며, 보편적 인식이 균형을 이루어야 하는 것이다. 다음은 제주학의 경우, 그것의 정 립이 분명해지려면 연구 방법론에 대해 숙고할 필요가 있다. 대상이 제주라는 지역으로 비교적 분명하기 때문이다. 그러나 연구에 임하면서 구태여 제주학의 성립 여부에 대해서 마음 쓸 필요는 없다. 제주학의 정립 여부는 연구의 종합 적 결과이지, 그것을 전제로 한 연구는 오히려 연구의 범위나 방법에서 한계를 자초할 위험성도 있다. 그래도 제주학의 정립에 대한 기대나 그 가능성을 갖는 것은 필요하다. 연구의 진지성이 유지될 수 있기 때문이다. 국문학을 연구하는 필자의 입장에서, 제주학 정립을 위한 학문적 과제를 생 각해 보면, 1) 문헌 자료의 수합 및 정리, 2) 자연과학의 분야의 연구 활성화 등이 있다. 특히 그동안의 연구 결과를 정리하고, 이를 고등학교 이상 독자들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 서술하여 출간하는 일이 중요하다. 과학의 대중화에 대해 서는 최근 사회적으로도 많은 관심을 보이고 있는데, 제주학의 경우도 그런 움 직임이 있었으면 한다.
Abstract
The establishment of Jejuology has already been discussed through many studies, but it still looks hard to find answers to the question. However, what is obvious is that specific discussions are possible only after a sufficient number of high quality researches have been made for establishing a scientific system, and declarative establishment of Jejuology without practical researches cannot base a long life of Jejuology. This is also the case for academic researches dealing with Jeju as a material or studies on school system. If the level of such researches is high, they can also provide a decisive help to the establishment of Jejuology, but on the contrary, even if Jejuology is put forward, research can be meaningless and rather hinder the establishment of Jejuology as a science. As to research questions, we should remember that the intuitive perception of an object does not guarantee the quality of the research. It is obvious that research on localities is based on the uniqueness of localities, but the research should not be limited to intuitive uniqueness but should maintain balance with general perception. Next, in case of Jejuology, the clear establishment of the science requires deliberation on research methodologies. It is because the object of research, which is the locality of Jeju, is relatively clear. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to concern over whether Jejuology has been established. Whether Jejuology has been established is the overall outcome of research, and research on the assumption that Jejuology has been established is likely to face a limitation in it scope or method. However, we need to expect the establishment of Jejuology or its possibility for maintaining the seriousness of research. From the position of the author who studies Korean literature, academic tasks for the establishment of Jejuology are: 1) collection and organization of related literature; and 2) the activation of research in the area of natural science. In particular, it is important to sum up previous researches, and rewrite and publish them in a way easily understandable to readers ranging from high school students and upward. Recently social attention is paid a lot to the popularization of science, and we hope to see such movements in Jejuology as well.
