본 연구는 이매뉴얼 월러스틴의 청년 시절부터 1972-1974년 세계체제분석이 탄생할 때까지의 기간을 여섯 시기로 나누어 그의 사유가 발전해가는 모습을 살펴본다. 특히 세계체제분석 탄생의 시공간적 배경이 되는 정치적·이론적 상황에 대한 지식사회학적 고찰이 중심이 된다. 본론의 2장과 3장에서는 학창 시절의 월러스틴이 자신의 기본 세계관과 정치의식을 형성해가는 과정을 그리고 있으며, 4·5·6장에서는 구조기능주의와 근대화론에 바탕한 주류적인 지역연구자로 성장해가던 월러스틴이 종속이론과 페르낭 브로델의 영향을 받고, 68혁명을 경험하면서 이론적으로 급선회하는 모습을 보여준다. 마지막으로 7장과 8장에서는 세계체제라는 새로운 분석단위를 제시하며 등장하는 세계체제분석의 탄생 과정을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 우리는 세계체제분석의 함의가 68혁명을 배경으로 지배적인 근대적 사회과학을 탈피하고 새로운 탈근대적 역사과학을 제시하는 집단적인 지적 운동이라는 점을 밝히게 된다.
Abstract
This study explores the six developmental phases of Immanuel Wallerstein’s thought from his younger days to 1972/74 when World-System Analysis was created. It focuses on the political and theoretical situation, which served as the context of the birth of World-System Analysis from the sociology of knowledge perspective. In the second and the third chapter, it is described how Wallerstein’s basic Weltanschauung and political consciousness were formed in his school days. The fourth, the fifth and the sixth chapter show Wallerstein’s theoretical turning after the impact of Dependency theory, Fernand Braudel and 1968 Revolution, before which he had been a student of mainstream Area Studies based on structural functionalism and modernization theory. And the birth process of World-System Analysis, claiming a new unit of analysis, is explained in the seventh and the eighth chapter. In conclusion, we make it clear that the meaning of World-System Analysis is placed in collective intellectual movement which unthinks the dominant modern social science and presents new postmodern science of history after 1968 Revolution.
