본 연구는 동아시아 지역연구(Area Studies, 지역학)와 연계된 국제관계상 종속체계로서의 타자적 인식공간과 그에 따른 자아적 재생산을 무력화하기 위해 기획된 것이다. 구체적으로는 세계체제 분석상 국지적 체제로서의 ‘동아시아’를 호명하고 그것의 외부(서양)적 의미부여, 그리고 지역 내부와의 긴장관계를 근현대 동아시아의 역사지형에서 통찰, 재개념화를 시도했다. 여기에는 포스트–모던 맥락에서 서구적 보편주의와 그에 저항하는 지역연구의 새로운 시각, 지역지식의 재구조화가 포함되었다. 이를테면 세계체제론의 대표적 서양학자인 이매뉴얼 월러스틴(Immanuel Wallerstein)과 조반니 아리기(Giovanni Arrighi)의 동아시아에 대한 개념화적 맥락, 즉 전자의 ‘서구적 외인성外因性’과 후자의 ‘전통적 내인성內因性’이라는 대립적인 두 시각을 고찰했다. 더불어 탈근대 ‘동아시아식 체제모델’의 동학을 월러스틴의 ‘보편적(지구적) 보편주의(universal universalism)’와 아리기의 ‘문명연방(common wealth of civilization)’의 교차지점에서 포착, 전망해보고자 했다. 월러스틴과 아리기는 동아시아체제에 대한 선명한 인식 차이에도 불구하고 두 가지 점에서 의미심장한 접합점을 발견할 수 있다. 첫째는 현 동아시아세계에 뿌리 깊게 착근된 서구식 세계체제 모델의 종식과 향후 ‘신아시아시대’의 도래를 전망한다는 점이다. 둘째는 신아시아시대의 성격 규명상 동서양 융ㆍ통합의 혁신적인 ‘문명시스템’을 상정한다는 사실이다. 이 두 학자의 이론은 새로운 동아시아 다이멘션(Dimension)으로서의 ‘지역시스템’을 구상하는 데 유의미한 지식자원으로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study was planned to disable ego reproduction from the cognitional space of others as a subordinate system in the international relations associated with area studies of East Asia. In specific, this study called for ‘East Asia’ as a local system in the world system analysis, attempting to define the external (western) meaning and gain an insight and reconceptualize the strained internal relationship through historical topography of East Asia in the modern and contemporary periods. This included a new view on the post-modern western universalism and restructuring of area knowledge. For instance, this study examined the two conflicting views that the conceptual contexts of East Asia proposed by leading western scholars of the world system theory, Immanuel Wallerstein and Giovanni Arrighi, namely ‘western exogeneity’ of the former and ‘traditional endogeneity’ of the latter. In addition, this study tried to view the dynamics of the post-modern ‘East Asian system model’ at the crossing point of Wallerstein’s ‘universal universalism’ and Arrighi’s ‘commonwealth of civilization.’ Despite clear differences in the awareness of the East Asian system, Wallerstein and Arrighi have two significant points in common. First is that they forecast the end of the western world system model rooted deeply in East Asia and the coming of the ‘New Asian Era.’ Second is that they presume an innovative ‘civilization system’ that converges the eastern and western worlds as a characteristic of the New Asian Era. Theories of these two scholars can be utilized as meaningful knowledge resources in designing the ‘area system’ within the new East Asian dimension.
