본 논문은 郭鍾錫의 『춘추』 문답에 보이는 『춘추』 해석방법론을 탐구함으로써 그의 『춘추』학이 가진 경학사적 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 곽종석은 기존의 『춘추』 注解書들이 해석자의 주관에 의해 聖人의 本意를 왜곡함으로써 『춘추』학에 부정적인 영향을 끼친 점에 주목하였다. 따라서 그는 『춘추』를 손질했던 ‘당시 성인의 뜻[聖人當日之意]’에 따라 기존 해석을 비판적으로 분석함과 동시에, 『춘추』 經文을 위주로 한 독법을 통해 『춘추』 본의의 실체를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 『춘추』를 기록할 때의 성인의 입장, 즉 孔子의 사회적 위치나 당시의 계급질서 및 군신관계 등을 근거로 삼아서, 성인의 마음이나 뜻을 풀이한 기존 해석의 타당성을 검토하였다. 다음으로 ‘경문을 판단 근거로 삼는다[以經爲斷]’는 해석 방법을 통해 『춘추』 경문을 정확하게 독해하고, 그 속에 담긴 『춘추』의 본의를 이해하고자 하였다. 이러한 곽종석의 『춘추』 해석 방법은 『춘추』의 근원에 대한 탐구를 통해 『춘추』 경학의 본질과 바람직한 방향성을 제시했다는 점에서 그 학술적 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study is aimed at revealing the historical meaning of the study on Confucian Classics contained in Kwak Jong Seok’s study of Chūnqiū by looking into the methodology for translation of Chūnqiū seen in Kwak’s work of questions and answers of Chūnqiū. Kwak focused on the point that the existing annotation books of Chūnqiū twisted the great man’s original intentions of Chūnqiū based on the annotators’ viewpoints, which negatively impacted the study of Chūnqiū. He, therefore, referred to ‘the intentions suggested by the great man living in the age of Chūnqiū [聖人當日之意]’ who straightened Chūnqiū to critically analyze the existing translations while trying to reveal the original truth of Chūnqiū through the reading methods based on the scriptures of Chūnqiū. For such purpose, first of all, he stood on the great man’s position when recording Chūnqiū, which was Confucius’ social position, social class order and relation between kings and royal servants in the era of Confucius to review the validity of the existing translations that translated the great man’s mind or intention. Then, through the translation method, ‘You must stand on the scriptures to make judgment [以經爲斷]’, he tried to correctly read and comprehend the scriptures of [以經爲斷] in order to understand the original meaning of Chūnqiū contained in such scriptures. Such translation method of Chūnqiū used by him is thought to be highly meaningful in academic aspects at the point that he suggested the essence of and a desirable direction in Confucian classic study on Chūnqiū.
