본 논문은 주자의 구체적인 『춘추』 해석 사례를 분석함으로써 그의 『춘추』 기록에 대한 접근 방식과 그 해석의 특징을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 주자는 『춘추』 해석의 정당성을 확보하기 위해서는 『춘추』 기록에 대한 객관적 접근 방법, 그리고 문장 하나하나에 대한 합리적 해석이 가장 중요한 요건이라고 주장하였다. 이를 위해 『춘추』의 기록을 문장 자체로만 놓고 객관적으로 접근하고 그 문장을 벗어난 확대 해석을 경계하였다. 그리고 해석의 과정에서 합당한 인용이나 증거의 동원, 설득력 있는 추론 등과 같이 최대한 합리적인 방법을 동원하여 『춘추』 해석의 정확성을 기하고자 노력하였다. 만약 기록의 의미 파악이 어려울 경우에는 근거 없는 천착을 지양하고 해석 자체를 유보해두는 방식을 선택했다. 이처럼 주자는 해석자의 주관이나 억측을 배제하는 방법으로 잘못된 천착이나 왜곡을 최대한 차단하려고 하였다. 그것이 바로 『춘추』 해석의 객관성과 합리성을 담보함으로써 『춘추』 기록의 본래 의미와 기록자의 의도를 밝힐 수 있는 최선의 방법이라고 판단한 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is to analyze interpretation cases of Chunqiu by Zhuzi and to clarify characteristics of its interpretations. Zhuzi found that it should be the first premise to arrange objective criteria for interpreting Chunqiu in order to guarantee its justification. To do that, he objectively approached records of Chunqiu only for its sentences and prevised overinterpretation beyond those sentences. And he also tried to apply the most rational methods on the process of interpretation by using proper citation and evidence and persuasive inference, etc in order to seek accuracy of Chunqiu interpretation. When it is hard to grasp meaning of a record, he rather reserved interpretation itself than sublated groundless scrutiny. As aforementioned, Zhuzi attempted to prevent wrong scrutiny and distortion as much as possible by adopting a method that excluded interpreter’s subjectivity or speculation. He decided that ensuring objectivity and rationality of interpreting Chunqiu was the best to clarify original meanings of Chunqiu records and intention of the recorder.
