곽종석(郭鍾錫)의 『춘추』 문답을 통해 본 19세기 조선조 지식인의 『춘추』 이해(1)

Abstract

Establishing a research target as the Chunqiu interlocution made between Gwak Jong-seok (郭鍾錫) and the literary class shown on Dajeongyeongeui dapmun (茶田經義答問) written by Gwak Jong-seok, this paper aims to clarify academic characteristics in the study on Confucian classics of Chunqiu in the 19th-century Joseon and the way the then intellectuals understood Chunqiu. The two major themes of discussions in Chunqiu interlocution of Gwak Jong-seok are formation and features of Chunqiu as a book itself and; its record method and reading. For the first theme, this paper sets up two subcategories of the relationship between Chunqiu and history books written in the state of Lu and; the time point when Chunqiu record was initiated. The second theme will be covered by a follow-up study. On top of the fact that this study has significance as the first exploration for Gwak Jong-seok’s study on Confucian classics of Chunqiu, it also has a meaning as Chunqiu study in Joseon period in a macroscopic view. First, Gwak Jong-seok not only inherited the study on Confucian classics of Chunqiu by his teacher Jinsang Lee (李震相) but demonstrated a more developed form. As it consequently makes a major part of Chunqiu study in Joseon period, it is a research target that must be examined. Second, the text of this study is writing from discussions made among Gwak Jong-seok and the then scholars in the form of interlocution. Thus, it is an important material which can define how 19th-century Joseon intellectuals understood Chunqiu, their major interests and even their level of understanding in the scripture Chunqiu as well as Gwak Jong-seok’s personal academic features.
